Dr. Lauter’s philosophy on treatment
“There is no unified theory of psychiatry and psychology, but the last twenty-five years have electrified the field. New medications. New talk therapies. The future of brain scans. There are more methods on how to analyze conditions. There are more interventions that bring about robust responses. A psychiatrist must always be in training, honing all skills, heightening awareness. Full understanding of the mind eludes us, such as defining consciousness and awareness, but there is a clearer understanding that the brain is a chemically based anticipatory machine that recognizes patterns both innate and learned. The ongoing refinement of this machine is what we experience as education and can be seen in documented cellular changes. Our brains try to generate predictable behavior and reasonable intentions. Some psychiatric conditions subtly interfere with these processes; others, thoroughly. The key to care is guiding patients along their own path, in a caring, empathetic way.”
